... to our new team member Antonela

Antonela Matijasic started her PhD in our research group at the beginning of this year. Here she tells you about her way to theoretical particle physics and how the search for a good challenge keeps her motivated. Thank you Antonela!

What did you study and where?

I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Department of Physics, University of Rijeka in Croatia. My undergraduate studies were in general physics and for the Master’s I chose a more specialized course in astrophysics and elementary particle physics.

Why did you decide to go along with a PhD in this area?

When I started with my undergraduate studies I had no preference for any particular area of research, but as I went further with my studies I got more interested in astrophysics. This is the reason why I chose the course in astrophysics and elementary particle physics for my Master’s. During that time I had an opportunity to take a quantum field theory and elementary particle physics course which prompted me to switch my concentration to theoretical particle physics. In the end I decided that I wanted to challenge myself and pursue a PhD in this area.

What do you enjoy about theoretical particle physics?

My favorite thing about theoretical particle physics is that it is both interesting and challenging. I find it interesting because it is trying to find the answers to the most fundamental questions but that is also why it is really challenging. And I love a good challenge. That‘s what keeps me motivated.

What are the goals you would like to achieve next?

I just started my PhD, so I still don’t know what I would like to do after that. My goals right now are to focus on my research and in my free time enjoy my stay in Munich. Also, I would love to get to know the German culturemore and learn the language.
